“The Lord tells his secrets to those who respect him; he tells them about his agreement.” Psalms 25:14 NCV
Story in 2 Samuel 22:1-9
“During the time David was king, there was a shortage of food that lasted for three years. So David prayed to the Lord. The Lord answered, “Saul and his family of murderers are the reason for this shortage, because he killed the Gibeonites.””
2 Samuel 21:1 NCV
What will be your reaction
There is a saying that:
When God reveals the reasons for your problem, the problem is solved .
When God reveals to you the reasons for the trouble, how will you address it?
Who are this Gibeonites
David knows the story behind these Gibeonites people.
What is their story
“(Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites; they were a group of Amorites who were left alive. The Israelites had promised not to hurt the Gibeonites, but Saul had tried to kill them, because he was eager to help the people of Israel and Judah.) King David called the Gibeonites together and spoke to them.” 2 Samuel 21:2 NCV
Breaking Covenant:
Saul the king broke the agreement between Israel and the Gibeonites and slain them.
Who suffers the consequences, the liability ,though Saul was no more alive.
There is a Reason why things happening
Prayer for you:
There are consequences when anyone break a
Don’t go into any of these if you know you’ll change your mind later.
There are grievous consequences.
Consequences, including the loss of blessings, exile, spiritual separation, judgment, and in the New Testament context, eternal separation from God.
See how God react to breaking of covenant/ agreement between two parties:
In the era of Prophet Jeremiah.
“The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom for the slaves.”
Jeremiah 34:8 NIV
“Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold a fellow Hebrew in bondage.”
Jeremiah 34:9 NIV
“So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free.” Jeremiah 34:10 NIV
“But afterward they changed their minds and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.” Jeremiah 34:11 NIV
Breaking an agreement has severe consequences.
If things are happening is there not a reason
Three consecutive years of hunger in the land in the time of king David there was a reason. God revealed it to him after praying.
The people of the land don’t have the clue until God reveals when David enquires from him.
God’s reaction to breaking agreement:
“Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:”
Jeremiah 34:12 NIV
““This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I said, ‘Every seventh year each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.’ Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me.” Jeremiah 34:13-14 NIV
“Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people. You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name. But now you have turned around and profaned my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.”
Jeremiah 34:15-16 NIV
God Punishment for breaking promises agreement and covenant
““Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘You have not obeyed Me in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and every one to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim liberty to you,’ says the Lord—‘to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine! And I will deliver you to trouble among all the kingdoms of the earth.” Jeremiah 34:17 NKJV
“And I will give Zedekiah, king of Judah and his princes, into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army which has gone back from you.” Jeremiah 34:21 NKJV
[ 2 Samuel 22 continue ]
King David understood the consequences of what his predecessor did.
And king David knew God wouldn’t do anything to help them unless the Gibeonite decided.
He called for the Gibeonites
“He asked, “What can I do for you How can I make up for the harm done so you can bless the Lord’s people”” 2 Samuel 21:3 NCV
A resolution.
“The Gibeonites said to David, “We cannot demand silver or gold from Saul or his family. And we don’t have the right to kill anyone in Israel.” Then David asked, “What do you want me to do for you”” 2 Samuel 21:4 NCV
“The Gibeonites said, “Saul made plans against us and tried to destroy all our people who are left in the land of Israel.”
2 Samuel 21:5 NCV
You can hear them voice their pain when they know Israel has realized what Saul did to them.
Here was their demand:
“So bring seven of his sons to us. Then we will kill them and hang them on stakes in the presence of the Lord at Gibeah, the hometown of Saul, the Lord’s chosen king.” The king said, “I will give them to you.”” 2 Samuel 21:6 NCV
“David gave these seven sons to the Gibeonites. Then the Gibeonites killed them and hung them on stakes on a hill in the presence of the Lord. All seven sons died together. They were put to death during the first days of the harvest season at the beginning of barley harvest.” 2 Samuel 21:9 NCV
In this circumstance, if today things like this are happening.
And the leadership or you don’t have a genuine priest that hears from God that can say Thus says the Lord.
What should you do?
God's promises for us still stand sure.
“For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’”
Isaiah 41:13 NKJV
““The poor and needy seek water, but there is none. Their tongues fail for thirst. I, the Lord, will hear them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.”
Isaiah 41:17 NKJV
"I will never leave you nor forsake you" appears in the Bible in both Deuteronomy 31:8 and Hebrews 13:5. It's a promise from God that He will always be with His followers.
Hebrews 10:36 means that people need to have endurance and patience so that they can do God's will and receive God's promises.
